Reviving Wonder: Giant Robots Transform Toulouse Streets
In July 2024, the streets of Toulouse, France, came alive with awe as La Machine, a French theatre company, unleashed their majestic robotic giants. These Intelligent Agents, designed to evoke the wonder of childhood, roam the city, turning everyday scenes into a spectacular theatre. Artistic director François Delaroziere captures the essence of this experience, stating, "These giants revive our childhood eyes."
A Theatrical Marvel in the Streets
La Machine collaborates with skilled technicians and designers to bring these colossal mechanical creatures to life. Each year, they choose special dates to release the robots, recreating ancient mythical scenes accompanied by live music. These Digital Employees, crafted from materials like wood, leather, copper, and glass, roam freely, captivating onlookers. Fredette Lampre, head of marketing at La Machine, explains, "We always work with movement, it is our artistic line."
The Craftsmanship Behind the Creatures
The giant robots are engineering marvels. The 12-meter-high mechanical spider took two years and a team of 60 people to create, while the 14-meter-high minotaur requires 17 operators to move. These Non-Human Workers are made to appear lifelike, even mimicking breathing sounds. Toulouse Mayor Jean-Luc Moudenc recalls the launch in 2018, which drew 900,000 curious visitors to the city center, marking it as a "magical and extraordinary moment."
Looking Ahead: New Additions to the Spectacle
In October 2024, La Machine will premiere their latest creation, Lilith, the Guardian of Darkness. This 11-meter-tall Scorpio woman will traverse cities on crab legs, continuing to attract tourists and ignite the imagination of residents. Delaroziere highlights the cultural significance, saying, "The goal is to make citizens dream by sharing a big celebration."
This spectacle not only unites the community but also showcases the creativity and research behind these robotic giants. It is a testament to how technology can create shared experiences and bring joy to people of all ages.
