Meta’s Ambition: Becoming the Android for Robots

Meta Enters the Robotics Market

On September 29, 2025, Meta announced plans to expand into the robotics market, aiming to become the “Android” of non-human workers. Unlike traditional robotics companies focusing mainly on hardware, Meta is prioritizing the development of a versatile software platform that other manufacturers can license. This approach could allow a wide variety of AI Employees, from household helpers to industrial robots, to operate using a standardized system.

The Technology Behind Metabot

Meta’s software strategy is spearheaded by CTO Andrew Bosworth and former Cruise CEO Mark Witten, alongside the resources of Superintelligence Labs. The platform, known as the “world model,” is designed to simulate complex physical actions, starting with hand movements and eventually enabling multi-step tasks. While the company has explored creating robots for household chores such as cleaning or folding laundry, these projects are still in early research stages.

Competing in a Growing Market

Meta is not alone in exploring domestic and service robotics. Apple is reportedly developing a robot with a manipulative arm and display, while Tesla’s Optimus humanoid has demonstrated controlled demonstrations of physical tasks. Meanwhile, Google’s DeepMind is advancing robotics AI by teaching machines to transfer knowledge across systems. Meta’s software-first strategy could position it as a key supplier of operating systems for robots, similar to how Android shaped the smartphone ecosystem.

Implications for Non-Human Workers

If successful, Meta’s platform could accelerate the adoption of AI Employees and Voice AI Agents in homes and workplaces. Standardized robotics software would allow diverse robots to communicate, learn, and perform tasks more efficiently. This shift could redefine labor dynamics, introducing new opportunities for human-robot collaboration.

Key Highlights:

  • Meta aims to be the “Android” for robots with a software-first strategy.
  • The company is developing Metabot and a “world model” platform to simulate complex actions.
  • Household robots for chores are in early research stages.
  • Competitors include Apple, Tesla, and Google DeepMind in robotics innovation.
  • Standardized platforms could enable wider adoption of AI Employees and Voice AI Agents.
