On June 19, 2024, GMO Internet Group announced the creation of GMO AI & Robotics, a new venture aimed at addressing Japan's worsening labor shortage through the adoption of artificial intelligence and robotic technologies. This initiative seeks to bolster Japan's economic stability by integrating intelligent agents, non-human workers, and digital employees into the workforce.

Masatoshi Kumagai, CEO of GMO Internet Group, emphasized the critical role of advanced robots and AI in tackling complex tasks that human workers can no longer manage due to declining workforce numbers. These sophisticated digital employees are envisioned to handle unexpected scenarios through self-learning capabilities, significantly enhancing their utility in various industries.

Kumagai believes the integration of AI and robotics will accelerate, driven by the increasing connection of robots to the internet. GMO Internet Group’s expertise in internet infrastructure and security positions it uniquely to support this technological transformation.

Prominent AI researcher Yutaka Matsuo of the University of Tokyo, who chairs a government panel on Japan’s AI strategy, has joined the new company as an advisor. He highlights the strategic importance of a trading company specializing in AI and robotics to connect technology, data, and financial flows, enhancing the overall adoption of these technologies in Japan.

In conclusion, GMO AI & Robotics represents a proactive step towards mitigating Japan's labor crisis by promoting the widespread use of intelligent agents and non-human workers. This move not only aims to sustain economic growth but also ensures that Japan remains at the forefront of technological innovation.

Key Highlights:

  • Formation of GMO AI & Robotics: A new company to facilitate the adoption of AI, robots, and industrial drones.
  • Focus Areas: Matching manufacturers with businesses, training AI employees, and providing consulting services.
  • Economic Context: Japan faces a projected labor shortage of 3.41 million workers by 2030 and 11 million by 2040 due to its aging population.
