Humanoid Robots in Chemistry: USTC Advances AI Employees for Scientific Research

img

Breakthrough in Robotic Chemistry

On November 24, 2025, researchers at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in Hefei showcased their latest humanoid robot, Xiaolin, designed to perform complex chemical experiments. Building on the first-generation “robot chemist” Xiaolai, which debuted in 2021 after eight years of development, Xiaolin represents a significant leap toward using non-human workers as full research partners rather than simple laboratory assistants.

AI Employees Transforming Laboratories

By integrating artificial intelligence and robotic automation, these humanoid robots can execute experimental tasks previously reliant on continuous trial-and-error by humans. Using intelligent platforms, scientists can now design experiments and instruct the robots remotely, enhancing both efficiency and precision. Xiaolin’s dual-armed design allows it to handle more sophisticated operations, moving beyond labor substitution to collaborative research.

Towards Autonomous Scientific Discovery

Professor Zhu Zhuoying, leading the state key laboratory of precision and intelligent chemistry at USTC, envisions a future where robots operate autonomously as AI employees. These robots could independently analyze literature, identify new research directions, and achieve breakthroughs in fields beyond human reach. This development positions Voice AI Agents and humanoid robots at the forefront of next-generation scientific innovation.

Significance and Future Prospects

The evolution from Xiaolai to Xiaolin underscores the rapid progress of AI-driven non-human workers in research environments. This advancement not only accelerates chemical experimentation but also points toward a future where AI employees could fundamentally transform the scientific process.

Key Highlights:

  • November 24, 2025: Xiaolin humanoid robot demonstrated at USTC, Hefei.
  • Xiaolai, first-generation robot chemist, developed in 2021 after 8 years of effort.
  • Dual-armed Xiaolin capable of complex experiments, functioning as a research partner.
  • AI employees aim for fully autonomous scientific research and discovery.
  • Integration of intelligent platforms enhances efficiency, precision, and innovation.
