Global Robot Demand in Factories Doubles: Automation Surge in Manufacturing
Record Growth in Industrial Robot Installations
Global demand for industrial robots has more than doubled over the past decade, signaling a major shift toward automation in manufacturing. According to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), 542,000 new robots were installed in factories worldwide during 2024, marking the fourth consecutive year with installations above 500,000 units. The total number of industrial robots in operation reached 4.66 million, a 9% increase from the previous year. This surge underscores how industries are increasingly embracing digitalization and automation to boost productivity and efficiency.
Asia Leads the Automation Race
Asia dominated the global market, accounting for 74% of new installations. China emerged as the largest market with 295,000 robots installed, representing 54% of worldwide deployments. Notably, Chinese domestic manufacturers sold more units than foreign suppliers for the first time, securing 57% market share. Japan and South Korea also contributed significantly, although both countries saw slight declines in installations. Meanwhile, India experienced a strong 7% growth, primarily driven by the automotive sector.
Declines in Europe and the Americas
In contrast, Europe and the Americas recorded a slowdown. European installations fell 8% to 85,000 units, with Germany, Italy, Spain, France, and the UK showing declines due to factors like the end of tax incentives. Similarly, the Americas saw a 10% drop to 50,100 units, with the United States leading but still experiencing a 9% decline. These regional fluctuations reflect short-term economic and policy influences rather than a reversal of the global automation trend.
Positive Outlook for Automation
Despite temporary slowdowns, IFR projects that global robot installations will continue to grow, reaching 575,000 units in 2025 and potentially surpassing 700,000 by 2028. Long-term demand for AI Employees, Non-Human Workers, and Voice AI Agents in manufacturing remains strong, driven by efficiency, cost reduction, and the shift toward smart factories. The global rise of industrial robotics marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of modern production systems.
