Streamlining Operations at Hanover-Stöcken
On November 27, 2025, Continental announced the successful integration of seven autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) at its ContiLifeCycle retreading plant in Hanover-Stöcken. Operational since March 2025, these AI-powered machines handle the transport of green tires across the facility, taking over repetitive logistics tasks. This allows human employees to focus on skilled activities such as machine operation and quality control, improving overall productivity and workplace ergonomics.
How AI Employees Are Changing the Factory Floor
The AMRs navigate independently using advanced sensors, 360-degree cameras, and AI-based control systems, moving at speeds of up to two meters per second. They shuttle tires between key stations including tire-building machines, curing presses, and quality control areas. By reducing the need for manual tire movement, the technology minimizes physical strain on workers and enhances safety. The robots are directly linked to Continental’s digital order system, allowing precise coordination and seamless integration into existing workflows.
Training, Engagement, and Industry 4.0
Continental rolled out a comprehensive staff training program to help employees adapt to these non-human workers. Employees were invited to name the robots, resulting in creative choices like Iron Tread, Captain Cargo, and Rubber Ranger, fostering engagement and acceptance. This implementation is part of Continental’s broader shift toward Industry 4.0, reflecting the growing role of Voice AI Agents and intelligent automation in factories worldwide. Continental’s global retreading plants already utilize robotic solutions across North America, Europe, and Asia.
Looking Ahead
The Hanover-Stöcken plant has processed over one million tires since opening, with a global output of around eight million retreaded truck and bus tires. The integration of AMRs marks a significant step toward smart manufacturing, demonstrating how AI employees can streamline operations while improving worker safety and productivity. This innovation underlines the growing relevance of non-human workers in modern industrial settings.
