Bulgaria’s Robotics Ambitions: Carving a Niche in the Global Market
Bulgaria’s Strategic Push into Global Robotics
On September 11, 2025, Bulgaria hosted the seventh Robotics Strategy Forum in Sofia, aiming to position itself as a specialized player in the global robotics industry. While the country currently lacks the capacity to manufacture complete robots, Bulgarian engineers are making significant strides in developing components and integration solutions. This strategic focus aligns with the nation’s broader industrial goals and its ambition to enhance its technological footprint on the world stage.
Engineering Excellence in Components and Integration
At the forum, Deputy Prime Minister and Innovation Minister Tomislav Donchev highlighted Bulgaria’s potential by sharing an anecdote about young engineers in the village of Draganovtsi upgrading industrial robots’ computer vision. He emphasized the need for more engineers, industrial sites, increased added value, and self-confidence in the industry. Yonko Chuklev, Deputy Chair of the Professional Association of Robotics, Automation, and Innovations (PARAi), noted that Bulgaria excels in software, systems integration, and specific hardware modules such as servo motors and power units. These capabilities enable Bulgarian firms to deliver specialized solutions to leading global manufacturers.
Customized Solutions for Global Markets
Radoslav Tchipanov, manager of HNC Electric Bulgaria, shared that his company sold about ten Chinese-made AUCTECH robots in the past year, including to one of Europe’s largest water-heater makers. Bulgarian engineers customized these machines by adding grippers, cameras, and tailored programming for each client. This approach underscores Bulgaria’s role in providing specialized, value-added services in the robotics sector.
Industrial Sector’s Strategic Importance
Minister Donchev pointed out that Bulgaria’s industrial sector accounts for nearly three times the share of the country’s GDP compared to agriculture and tourism combined. This underscores the sector’s strategic role in boosting innovation and competitiveness. By focusing on niche areas within robotics, Bulgaria aims to leverage its engineering expertise and industrial strengths to carve out a unique position in the global market.
