Robots in the Living Room: A New Kind of Digital Employee
In April 2025, a team of MIT researchers unveiled a fascinating development in how families interact during storytime: social robots that act as conversation partners. These Intelligent Agents, specifically the Jibo robot, were tested in the homes of 71 families with children aged 3 to 7. Over the course of one to two months, these Non-Human Workers joined six story-reading sessions with each family, playing roles such as moderator, demonstrator, or playful companion. Their mission? To spark richer conversations between parents and children.
What the Study Found—and Why It Matters
The results were clear: families that interacted with the robot, particularly English-speaking households, experienced more engaging and reciprocal conversations. The robot’s ability to ask follow-up questions, express curiosity, and suggest discussion topics made storytime more dynamic.
