Robots in the Living Room: A New Kind of Digital Employee
In April 2025, a team of MIT researchers unveiled a fascinating development in how families interact during storytime: social robots that act as conversation partners. These Intelligent Agents, specifically the Jibo robot, were tested in the homes of 71 families with children aged 3 to 7. Over the course of one to two months, these Non-Human Workers joined six story-reading sessions with each family, playing roles such as moderator, demonstrator, or playful companion. Their mission? To spark richer conversations between parents and children.

The results were clear: families that interacted with the robot, particularly English-speaking households, experienced more engaging and reciprocal conversations. The robot's ability to ask follow-up questions, express curiosity, and suggest discussion topics made storytime more dynamic.
