EV Makers Dive into Robotics: The Rise of Humanoid Innovations

img

In a surprising turn, major Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers are venturing into the world of humanoid robotics. Companies like BYD, GAC Group, Chery, NIO, Seres, and Xpeng are now incorporating Intelligent Agents and Digital Employees into their vision for the future. This bold step is not only reshaping their industry but also charting a new path for robotics.

Humanoid Robots: A Strategic Leap

Since April 2024, Chery has been working with AI company Aimoga to develop Mornine, a humanoid robot that bridges the gap between humans and machines. Mornine is designed to understand human language and interpret interaction intentions, transforming them into precise actions and language responses. Meanwhile, NIO has formed a dedicated 20-member team to create a robot dog project, spearheaded by Xu Kang, an algorithm expert formerly with Momenta. This highlights the sector’s broader commitment to advancing embodied AI.

Implications for the Future

The integration of Digital Employees could revolutionize manufacturing and services, boosting efficiency and paving the way for new use cases. As these Intelligent Agents become more advanced, the boundary between humans and machines continues to blur, offering a glimpse into the future of work and innovation.

Key Highlights:

  • Technological Expertise: These automakers bring advanced skills in sensors, batteries, and machinery that are critical for developing humanoid robots.
  • Rising Demand: In 2024, China's humanoid robot market reached 2.76 billion yuan, with forecasts projecting growth to 75 billion yuan by 2029, making up 32.7% of the global market.
  • Policy Push: The Chinese government is prioritizing robotics innovation, aiming for industrial systems in place by 2025 and robust supply chains by 2027.
