In a groundbreaking development at the Artificial and Mechanical Intelligence (AMI) lab of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) in Genova, Italy, the iCub3 avatar system has emerged from four years of rigorous testing to redefine the capabilities of humanoid robots. The research team, led by Italian researcher Daniele Pucci, published their findings in a recent Science Robotics paper, showcasing the successful implementation of the iCub3 system in real-world scenarios and its evolution into the new ergoCub robot.
The iCub3 system, composed of the iCub3 humanoid robot and wearable technologies called iFeel, has demonstrated its prowess in three distinct real-life tests. In November 2021, the avatar allowed a human operator in Genoa to remotely explore the Biennale di Venezia in Venice, 300 kilometers away. The challenges included stable remote communication, cautious movements in an art exhibition setting, and replicating precise body motions, even allowing the operator to feel a hug from the remote location. The second test at the We Make Future Show in June 2022 involved navigating a theater stage in Rimini, showcasing the robot’s enhanced expressive abilities amidst electromagnetic interference. Finally, in November 2022, the avatar system competed in the ANA Avatar XPrize in Los Angeles, pushing the iCub3 robot to its limits with 10 different tasks in a Martian-like arena.
The experience gained from these tests played a pivotal role in the transformation of the iCub3 avatar system into the ergoCub robot. Currently under development at IIT, the ergoCub aims to integrate seamlessly into work environments, minimizing risks and fatigue in collaborative tasks for industries and healthcare.
